54 - STREET CRAFTSMEN
As you walk around this museum you will come across several trades which were practised in the streets.
The milkman, the glass-mender, the mattress-maker, the water-carrier, the knife-sharpener and others walked the streets proposing their goods or services.
Others were hard at work:
• The delivery boy and his tricycle,
• The village policeman who watched out for rowdies disturbing the peace,
• The sandwich board man who was paid for advertising products to the public, etc.
In those days when a household emergency occurred it was easy to find some handy help from artisans who might be working a few doors away
Many of these small trades could be learned easily: all you needed was to be plucky, tenacious and adaptable.
Wandering through the streets of yesteryear, one could meet these old trades on every corner.
